Archeologists date meditation as far back as 5,000 BCE. And there’s a reason why it’s stood the test of time. The transformative practice of meditation has ties to nearly every religion, ancient and modern, and it spans the entire globe.

Makes you wonder--what’s all the hype about?

Meditation is prescribed by doctors, yogis, gurus, coaches, leaders, and the most famous do-gooders. Arianna Huffington, Oprah, Jeff Weiner, and the like all say that what started out as “something worth trying” quickly turned into the secret to enjoying life, personal freedom, and unlimited abundance.

Here’s a little bit on why (and how) meditation may just be the key to having the best human experience possible.

Physical Benefits of Meditation

Meditation is the secret fountain of youth we’ve all been looking for. And it’s even backed by science. Modern medical doctors are finally supporting what naturopaths have been saying for a millennial.

Breathing practices, guided meditation, and similar progressive relaxation talk, directly affect the body (immediately I might add) by
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Improving circulation
  • Reducing heart rate
  • Increasing blood oxygen levels
  • Reduced respiratory rate
  • Significantly subsides symptoms of anxiety, stress, and overwhelm
  • Lower blood cortisol levels
  • Deepens feelings of relaxation

With these benefits alone, Meditation is proven to address the root cause of so many illnesses that plague America including obesity, Diabetes, and suicide-related mental health issues.

Metaphysical Benefits of Meditation

The physical benefits of meditation are incredible, but it’s the spiritual or metaphysical side effects of this practice that are truly transformative.

Meditation results in stillness. A sense of ease and breath that allows you to step outside of your usual over-thinking, feeling, and response patterns so that you can just be. It doesn’t take long to recognize that you are not your thoughts, you are not your feelings--rather you’re the one who experiences these human responses to life.

You’ve now gained an entirely new perspective on your existence that leads to empowered behavior like
  • Manifesting your reality
  • Accepting abundance freely
  • Avoiding fight or flight mode
  • Experiencing true love for yourself and others

The meditated mind is not judgmental. It does not obsess over to-do lists. It’s not concerned with bills, chores, expectations, or other attempts to earn love and approval.

Meditation teaches calmness, it opens the mind to creativity, allows the soul or higher self to speak to you, brings about profound realizations and understanding, improves focus and drive, reveals lessons, processes suppressed emotion, brings about serenity and self-awareness. And this is just to name a few.

The Road to Self-Discovery

The ultimate benefit of the transformative practice of meditation is the ability to detach from internal and external matters and grant yourself permission to just be. This is a state of bliss where you no longer judge yourself or others, there are no comparisons, no pain. You simply are a breathing being.

Meditation is true liberation and then comes ascension. Ascension is where you effortlessly discover your purpose, power, and love for yourself and all others. It is the highest state of human consciousness where one can experience the deepest sense of joy, pleasure, and peace.

How to Get Started

Too many people give up on meditation after ten minutes hoping to “feel something”. It’s just not how it works. You might not change your life after a single session but applying these tips will deepen your practice and allow you to experience the steady elevation that mediation can bring to your body, mind, and spirit.

1. Set An Intention

One of the best things about meditation is that each session can feel different. It all depends on what you want to accomplish physically, mentally, or emotionally. Intention for meditation can be anything you want. For example:
  • Release anger from something that happened today
  • Clear my mind to encourage creativity for my craft
  • Acknowledge sadness and self-soothe
  • Remove blockages, doubts, fear
  • Seek inner guidance and clarity for strong decision-making
  • Restore energy and vitality
  • Heal from trauma

2. Don’t Resist Thoughts

Your brain is used to thinking constantly, so when thoughts arise during meditation and you accidentally follow the rabbit down the hole, as soon as you become aware of the fact that you’ve been distracted from the present moment, correct it. Here are ways to stay within the meditation mode
  • Count your breath (4 counts inhale 5 counts exhale)
  • Pay attention to your body. Feel where your body meets the chair, pillow, floor, or mat. Wiggle your toes one at a time. Keep the mind within the body and not on thoughts of the past or future.
  • Picture doors, windows, or your chakras opening. If you visualize openings you are manifesting expansion. This leads to believing in opportunities, resources, abundance, and new beginnings.

Be Consistent

To truly evolve your meditation practice and transform your life with it, you have to remain consistent and continue to grow. Start with 15 minutes every day for 2 weeks. Then increase by 5 minutes every week.

Some days you won’t want to, and on those days just keep the promise to yourself of a 5-minute meditation. That’s where some serious magic happens and you notice the resistance begins to slip away. Emotions are released. And your spirit becomes renewed all within a handful of minutes.

It’s also important to never shame yourself if you go days or weeks without meditating. The higher self has no internist in you feeling guilty. Just meet yourself on your mat, take a few slow deep breaths, and slip back into your meditation routine.

Guided Meditations

Guided meditation on Youtube is a great place to start. They can significantly help you train your mind and body to be still. Eventually, you’ll be able to customize your meditation practice once these audios have taught you how to align with the moment and sink into the meditation experience.

Why Does Meditation Work?

So often, life feels like a race. Meditation is a gentle reminder that all we need, all that we chase, and all that we aspire to be is already inside us. Nothing achieved externally could compare to the pure love and joy that can be felt internally through meditation practices.
