THE LOVERS: Major Arcana VI

Perhaps the favorite card of most querents, The Lovers is Tarot’s ultimate love and happiness card. It depicts the elements of the relationship we all want in our heart of hearts: a beautiful naked truth, two human beings with open hearts, touched by the divine, blessed with purest intentions.

A closer look at the card reveals significant mystic meanings. The background looks unmistakably like the Garden of Eden, complete with a snake and an apple tree. The two people in the card, much like Adam and Eve, are naked. There’s a benign divine presence that’s overlooking the events. The sky is blue and a huge sun is present: it’s a beautiful state of being.

This is a personal Garden of Eden: it is the garden inside the querent’s heart, one that brings enlightenment through love, surrender and shedding of all ego layers. Making mistakes is possible, but not likely, as the woman in the card is looking at the divine presence. She doesn’t acknowledge the snake behind her. The man is looking at his woman. This is Eastern Tantra’s definitive recipe for happiness and fulfillment: man finds the deepest meaning of life through his woman, and woman finds her meaning by staying connected to divine love and channeling it to the world and to her man. THE DEVIL: Major Arcana XV

Even though The Devil is a feared card by most, it holds keys to true happiness and love. Depending on its location and relation to other cards in the spread, it can be a very positive card (or a warning, but only to get you to take the right actions, so you can be happy).

Can you see how similar The Devil is to The Lovers? Not only in layout, but also in terms of symbols? What’s more, The Devil is number 15 in Major Arcana. If you add 1+5, you get 6, which is the number for The Lovers. Both cards are in the Major Arcana – the suit in Tarot that reveals the deepest secrets of our psyche. The numerical connection has to do with emotional and spiritual transformation. Only through the tests of The Devil, one brings about the energy of The Lovers.

Look closely at The Devil. The naked woman and man are in chains. But their chains are loosely hanging on their necks; they are removable. These two are serving their inner devils by choice. They are acting out of past conditionings, under the influence of their fears and egos. They are not opening their hearts because it’s easier to deal with the devil they know than the angel they don’t know. They are sticking to old behavior patterns because they have never experienced the magnificence of real love.

The Devil’s torch is pointing down. People who repeat the same old cycles tend to lose faith. It becomes difficult for them to believe that things can change for the better. Sometimes they suffer so much that they lose the ability to look up at the skies and believe in a good power. To go from The Devil to The Lovers, a leap of faith is needed. Belief in self, and belief in the goodness of the universe.

Six of Wands: Minor Arcana, Wands VI

A well-dressed man on a horse, crowned with a wreath, and holding a wand with a wreath. He has people following him. His horse is noble. The sky is clear blue, and all six wands have leaves on them. They have flowered.

Wands in Tarot stand for fire and fiery energy. It’s the energy that propels us forward to start new projects, create new things, start companies, and support causes. It’s the energy that allows us to translate our thoughts into actions. Six of Wands features a man, a horse (represents masculine energy), and the element of fire (a masculine element).

The card is representative of substantial worldly success and the post-celebration.
In Tarot, left represents the past, and right represents the future. The man in the card is coming from the past and moving into the future, with confidence, optimism, and feeling good about what he has accomplished before.

Nine of Swords: Minor Arcana, Swords IX

Looks gloomy, doesn’t it? A person waking up from his sleep in the middle of the night, perhaps because of a bad dream, or stressful thoughts... He covers his face with his hands in desperation. He is alone in his bed. But make no mistake: this is a GOOD card!

Swords in Tarot stand for thoughts. While the figure in the card has too many thoughts, notice how none of the swords are pointed at him. They are perfectly parallel. This means, it should actually be very easy for him to organize his thoughts, once he stops worrying. Everything is working out for him.

He is covered with plush bedding, sleeping on a nice bed. His bedspread is covered with roses. He is worrying for no reason. The situation he is in is not bad at all; it’s all in his head. In fact, the situation he is in will lead to really good things.

Look closely at his bedspread again. Can you trace the zodiac sign symbols in the blue squares? The figure in the card has all the universal elements and powers he needs to accomplish his tasks! The whole universe is with him!
