A Healing Halloween Ritual
Written By Expert Susan Speaks with Spirit
Halloween, or Samhain, is when the veil between this world and the spirit world is at its thinnest and some believe that it carries with it the help and guidance of spirit and the divine. It's also the season of harvest -- and harvest festivals. Traditionally, harvest festivals were a way to close out this season and transition into Mother Earth’s season of slumber. As the weather turns colder, the earth begins to prepare for her winter’s sleep. But because so many of us are city/suburban dwellers we might feel we have lost touch with the natural world and her cycle. This little ritual can help you reconnect and reflect.
As Halloween approaches, it is a good time to pay off old debts and complete open karma. It is a great time to start manifesting new things in your life. Think about those things you’d like to throw out of your life and those things you’d like to bring in. Begin by writing down those things you’d like to leave your energy. On another piece of paper write down those things you’d like to cultivate into your life. Always frame it in the positive, particularly the things you’d like to bring into your life. For example, instead of saying you’d like to not be short of money, write that you’d like to have more wealth and abundance in your life.
On the evening of Halloween, prepare two candles -- one white and one black. Underneath the black candle, place the list of things you’d like out of your life. Underneath the white candle place the list of things you’d like to come into your life. Practice safety, of course, and be sure the candle holders are stable.
Between the two candles, place a plate with a lovely apple. By cutting the apple in half (horizontally – across the seed casing), the seed casing resembles a pentagram which is a very protective symbol.
Some may view a pentagram as a negative occult symbol, but in fact, it is a very strong protection symbol! It also represents the five sacred elements of air, water, fire, earth and spirit. Next to your apple, place a glass of some beverage (non-alcoholic). You can also place a pretty vase of flowers like chrysanthemums or marigolds between the candles too.
As you light the candles, focus on how light dispels darkness. Focus on how the light dispels the energy of the things you wish to work out of your life and how the light illuminates the pathway to the things you wish to cultivate into your life.
Once the candles are lit, it is the perfect time to pull out any divination tools you have and begin to play. I always have the best time with my runes on Halloween night! It is also a perfect time to get a reading, particularly a mediumship reading as the veil is so thin between the two worlds!
When you are done, snuff out the candles (don’t blow them out). Put your lists into a fire-safe container and burn them with a little sage or lavender. An alternative is to bury them. Take your apple and beverage outside and pour the beverage into the earth. You can either bury the apple (with your lists) or leave the apple out on the open ground for the birds, squirrels or other critters to eat.
Happy Halloween! I hope this little ritual helps you get in touch with the natural world and the spirit world!
